When is being scared a good thing?

A friend of mine recently told me that he was exploring his career options.

He may either continue consulting independently or accept a position in an established company.

He said both options scare him to death.

Good for him!

It tells me that he’s entertaining possibilities that are a stretch for him in one way or another and that he’s very concerned about doing his new job well.

It also tells me that he is assessing what it will take to be successful and already considering how he might approach a new role.

Being scared is only a problem when fear paralyzes you.

On the other hand, if you’re not at least a little scared you’re probably not pushing yourself.

Everything is in constant motion.

Fear, in the right dose, can help us all stay sharp.
