The American Society of Nephrology (ASN) is the world’s largest professional society devoted to the study of kidney disease. Composed of over 18,000 physicians and scientists, ASN promotes expert patient care, advances medical research, and educates the kidney community. ASN publishes two of the top journals in Nephrology – Journal of the American Society of Nephrology (JASN) and Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology (CJASN), and manages ASN Kidney Week, the world’s premier nephrology meeting where kidney health professionals gather to share the latest advances in kidney science.
Delta Think has worked with ASN on a number of projects to date. Most notably, Delta Think was engaged to explore the possibility of launching a new ASN fully open access journal. We conducted in depth research and analysis to assess the options and explore the new journal’s potential strategic fit with their mission, strategy, and operations. Utilizing both customized data from the Delta Think OA Data & Analytics Tool, along with ASN’s internal data, information gathered during a targeted feature and functionality landscape review, and detailed interviews with other publishers, Delta Think helped ASN answer key questions:
- What are the overarching market drivers and trends in fully OA journal publication?
- Why do organizations launch fully OA journals? How do they measure success?
- Within Nephrology, could a fully OA journal be a viable model?
- Where have fully OA journals been launched and have they been successful?
Once ASN determined to proceed, Delta Think was again engaged to explore in more detail the right mix of mission and journal attributes needed to ensure a successful open access journal launch for the society.
