Philadelphia, PA (October 22, 2018) – Delta Think (www.deltathink.com), a consulting and advisory firm focused on innovation and growth in scholarly communications, today announced the release of a new Open Access Market Sizing analysis as part of the continually updated Delta Think Open Access Data & Analytics Tool (OA DAT). Launched in January 2017, OA DAT an interactive, expertly curated, and regularly updated suite of information focused on Open Access that allows publishers, librarians, and funders to track and assess the impact of open access uptake and policies on the scholarly communications market and ecosystem. Today’s analysis marks the third Market Sizing report released by Delta Think since OA DAT’s inception.

“Market Sizing is a major topic in our Open Access Data & Analytics Tool. Its regular update demonstrates our commitment to providing the industry with continually updated data and analysis,” said Ann Michael, CEO of Delta Think. “Our position in the industry as a trusted independent third party has allowed us to consistently grow the number of publishers confidentially providing us with revenue and volume data, used to benchmark multiple public data sources. This process enables us to provide unparalleled insights into the complicated dynamics of the Open Access marketplace.”

The updated market sizing data show the Open Access market making strong progress, growing at a rate of 16% between 2016 and 2017. Highlights from the analysis include:

  • In 2017, the Open Access market reached approximately $570m USD, up from roughly $490m in 2016. It is on track to exceed $600M in 2018.
  • Open Access represents ~23% of market volume and ~5% of market value.
  • Data suggest a roughly 75/25 split between fully open access and hybrid journals respectively, by both value and volume.
  • The number of open access articles published grew by around 12% from 2016 to 2017; articles published in fully OA journals grew by just under 10%, and those in hybrid journals by just over 20%.

“Our analysis has revealed some complicated dynamics behind the headlines,” said Dan Pollock, who leads Data Analytics at Delta Think. “We see different growth trends emerging between fully open access and hybrid journals.”
