In case you haven’t heard, there’s a new search engine in town, Cuil (pronounced “cool”). In their own words:

“Rather than rely on superficial popularity metrics, Cuil searches for and ranks pages based on their content and relevance. When we find a page with your keywords, we stay on that page and analyze the rest of its content, its concepts, their inter-relationships and the page’s coherency.”

So far the results are a bit disappointing.  For example, the picture on the Cuil search result below is of me, but the text has nothing to do with me.

When I searched Cuil for Cuil I couldn’t find a reference to the search engine.  When I searched Google for Cuil the first 5 entries were about the search engine.

I’m sure Cuil is working on refining their algorithm to provide better results.  I’ll keep checking in with Cuil and comparing its usefulness to Google’s.

In my opinion, it’s only a matter of time before something better than Google search gets developed.

(PS Cuil people, if you’re listening, the display of Cuil on the iPhone needs a little work.  The black bar that appears at the bottom of the web page is in the middle of the iPhone screen (when you scroll) and covers search results.)
