“Looks like
we are in the same industry, selling our brains.”
That was the last line of an email I read recently.
And it’s true.
Does that statement apply to you?
I find that most of my work has immediate impact,
but “hard core” tangible results can lag.
It can be weeks or months before a product launches
or a system goes live.
Selling my brain is great – but every once in a
while I need to do something tangible, with immediate results, to maintain my sanity.
Today, I painted walls.
My muscles ache and I’m exhausted but I feel great.
I just keep walking past my work thinking “I did
that!”
Jamin –
I like that – covering the walls with completed “to do” lists means they don’t have to paint!! It’s even a cost saver.
I also liked your post on planned abandonment – very important in the world of consulting!
Thanks for your insights!

Big time! Sometimes there is an emptiness to knowledge work – there is little physical evidence of our hard efforts. Working with our hands for a bit can be a fruitful and rewarding change. Stepping back and looking at a job well done is very satisfying! Made me think about a company I read about recently; they literally cover the walls with their done to-do lists!
True, but Xbox is surely more fun!
This is SO much more productive and empowering than my approach to play an Xbox 360 video game.
lol.
